East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL)

The East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) is one of China’s oldest universities and most prestigious law schools. The ECUPL, founded in 1952, is located in Shanghai, the economic center of the People’s Republic of China. It is on the campus of the former St. John’s University where many old buildings of significant historic and architectural value are preserved intact.

Formerly a higher learning institution of the Ministry of Justice, ECUPL is now a university jointly administered by the central and Shanghai governments. It is also the first Chinese University to be accredited by the American Bar Association. Many of the University’s professors and researchers have not only taken up important posts in national academic organizations, but have acted as consultants for the legislature at various levels of the country as well.

The ECUPL has established eleven colleges including the Law College, Economic Law College, International Law College, Criminal Justice College, Foreign Language College, Postgraduate Education College, Sociology College, Public Administration College, Commerce College, Intellectual Property College and Continuing Education College. The university currently offers a PhD programme to foreign candidates. Degree programs in International Law, Legal History, Economic Law and Criminal Law as well as Masters programs in Jurisprudence, History of the Legal System, Constitutional law, Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Civil and Commercial Law, Procedural Law, Economic Law, Environmental Law and International Law are currently offered. ECUPL also welcomes qualified foreign students in advanced courses in law or Chinese language, including Legal Mandarin.
