Title	Teaching Law in a Digital World: Pedagogical Practices for Compassion, Ethics, and Digital Competence
Abstract	The development of technology and its use in legal practice has transformed the skills required from law graduates. Legal education must therefore move beyond technical training to equip students with ethical awareness, empathy, and social responsibility. This paper argues that compassionate pedagogy provides a practical framework for achieving this balance, integrating human-centred teaching practices into technology-focused legal curricula. Compassionate pedagogy prioritizes student wellbeing, reflective learning, collaborative problem-solving, and sensitivity to the societal impact of law and technology. In practice, this includes structured reflective exercises that examines, amongst others, ethical dilemmas in using technology, simulations that explore the consequences of AI and data misuse, and teaching methods that foster empathy, emotional intelligence, and mindful engagement with legal challenges. By combining these approaches with digital skills training, educators create learning environments that nurture both competence and conscience. The paper attempts to demonstrate that embedding compassionate pedagogy into legal education produces graduates capable of navigating technological and ethical complexities in a socially responsible manner. Students not only acquire the knowledge to use digital tools effectively but also the critical awareness and ethical reasoning necessary to anticipate the societal effects of technology. This approach underscores the central role of teaching practice in developing legal professionals who are both digitally competent and ethically attuned, capable of contributing to just, sustainable, and responsible legal systems.
Biography	Dr. Izura Masdina binti Mohamed Zakri is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, and serves as Deputy Dean (Undergraduate Studies) and Programme Coordinator for the LLB. She oversees curriculum development and academic quality, ensuring that legal education remains responsive to technological advancements and societal needs. Her expertise lies in Contract Law and Cyberlaw. Her research interests focuses on legal education and the use of Generative AI, examining how emerging technologies are transforming both the practice of law and its pedagogy. She explores the ethical, social, and regulatory implications of AI, highlighting its impact on students and responsible legal practice. Dr. Izura Masdina believes in compassionate pedagogy, and integrates reflective, student-centred, and empathetic teaching methods into technology-focused curricula, fostering both digital competence and ethical awareness among students.
