Title	Platform fissurisation, labour control and regulatory challenges in China’s gig economy
Abstract	This study unpacks the distinctive features of layered employment models in the food delivery sector of China’s platform economy and assesses their implications for algorithmic management and the labour regulatory regime. In doing so, this study develops the concept of ‘platform fissurisation’ to examine the impacts of layered employment, whereby gig workers are employed by a third party connected with the digital platform. This study probes the workplace practices of China’s largest food delivery platform, Meituan, to explore how the fissurisation of platform work and algorithmic dimensions of management operate and interact on the ground. This study provides new insights into how platform fissurisation has not only changed the form of work undertaken by food delivery workers but also intensified labour control through three mechanisms, namely rational control, normative control, and collective control. The authors’ findings highlight the need for evolving labour policies and laws to better protect these workers’ rights and improve their working conditions.
Biography	Yaolin Wang is an assistant professor at School of Economic Law at East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL). Prior to her role at ECUPL, she held the post of postdoc at the City University of Hong Kong. She has also worked in legal practice in Shanghai and in international organizations, such as the United Nations Devepment Programme, in Beijing . She received her Ph.D.in Law, Master of Laws, and Bachelor in Law and Management degrees from the City University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Zhongnan Univerversity of Economics and Law. Her research interests are in labour law, especially non-standard forms of employment and the regulatory issues in the context of China’s digital economy.
