  Michele Deitch
United States
August 2017 – December 2017

Michele Deitch is a Senior Lecturer on criminal justice and juvenile justice policy at the University of Texas, where she holds a joint appointment in the Law School and the School of Public Affairs. She has more than 30 years’ experience working as both a practitioner and as a scholar on issues related to prison reform, sentencing, and juvenile justice. Most of her current research focuses on independent oversight of prisons and conditions of confinement. She helped draft the American Bar Association’s Standards on the Treatment of Prisoners, and she co-chairs the ABA’s Subcommittee on Correctional Oversight. She also advises policymakers and agencies around the US on jail safety issues, and provides invited legislative testimony. While at NUS, she will be doing comparative research on corrections oversight and prison operations in Asia, to complement similar research she has conducted in Europe.

Michele holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an M.Sc. in Experimental Psychology (Criminology) from Oxford University, and a B.A. from Amherst College
