International and Comparative Oil and Gas Law

Course Description:
This course explores principles and rules relating to the exploration for, development and production of oil and gas (often described as "upstream oil and gas operations"). After an introduction to the geopolitics of oil and the history surrounding the oil and gas industry, the course commences with an examination of different arrangements governing the legal relationship between the petroleum producing states and international oil companies (IOCs). It then moves on to consider various commercial agreements governing the relationships between IOCs involved in upstream petroleum operations (such as joint operating and unitisation agreements) and the liability/risk allocation provisions commonly found in oilfield service contracts. It will conclude by examining key areas of regulatory law, notably the decommissioning of offshore installations. The course is international and comparative in its focus, drawing on the experience of many jurisdictions and legal systems at different points in time.
