Degree Classification

Successful completion of the JD programme leads to the award of the following classes of degrees. For purposes of seeking admission to the Singapore Bar, students must attain at least a "JD (Merit)" to be considered a Qualified Person under the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules.

Degree Classification Criteria
JD (Highest Distinction) Cumulative Weighted Numerical Average for all courses taken at NUS that is equivalent to a grade of A- or better.
JD (Distinction) Cumulative Weighted Numerical Average for all courses taken at NUS that is equivalent to a grade of B or better.
JD (Merit) Cumulative Weighted Numerical Average for all courses taken at NUS that is equivalent to a grade of C or better.
JD Complete the number of units required for a JD degree but do not qualify for JD (Highest Distinction), JD (Distinction) and JD (Merit).

Failure of Courses as Exceptions to Degree Classification

No student admitted in and after AY2024/2025 will be eligible for JD (Highest Distinction) or JD (Distinction) if:
  (a) they have failed more than 12 units of courses at NUS (or while on an approved exchange programme); or
  (b) they have taken more than 7 semesters to complete the 3-year JD programme or 5 semesters to complete the 2-year JD programme (excluding periods where the student has been granted a leave of absence)
