A. Curriculum Requirements

1.

Students are required to take a total of 32-36 units of courses. The programme is specially designed such that students who complete the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in  International Arbitration (GCIA) Programme will be granted 12 units toward the total units required for the Graduate Diploma. Thus, students are required to complete 20-24 units of courses from the Maritime Law grouping and 12 units from the GCIA Programme.

GCIA (equivalent to 12 units) 4-5 units of Maritime Law elective courses (i) Compulsory course – Charterparties (5 units); and

2.

Students will be automatically registered for the GCIA Programme. The GCIA comprises three courses: Principles of Contract, Tort and Evidence [CTE]; Arbitration Law & Practice [ALP]  and Drafting and Award Writing Practicum [DAW]. Each course is equivalent to 4 units. Students must take all three GCIA courses in the same semester.

If students fail any of the GCIA courses, the Board of Examiners may allow one further opportunity to pass the courses in the subsequent year. Alternatively, students may make up the failed units with Maritime Law courses to complete the GDMLA. However, in this latter situation, students will be considered to have dropped out of the GCIA, and will not receive the GCIA certification and the relevant professional arbitration accreditation that comes with it.

Students will have to pay the separate full fees for the GCIA on top of the tuition fee for the GDMLA programme if they fail any GCIA courses and re-take them in the subsequent year.

The Faculty's Continuing Legal Education will send details regarding the GCIA to students before the Programme commences in the second week of January.
