Course Requirements

Pro Bono Service

All LLB and GLB students from Cohort AY2014-15 onwards must complete the law compulsory course, LC2009 Pro Bono Service.

Civil Law Courses

All LLB and GLB students from Cohort AY2014-15 onwards must complete at least one law elective course from the Civil Law cluster list. This requirement may also be satisfied by a course taken while on exchange subject to the approval of the Office of Academic Affairs. Students are to indicate clearly when submitting their exchange course list form for approval.

These courses build on the first year introduction to civil law, particularly as it has developed in Asian legal traditions, in the course Legal Systems of Asia. "Civil Law" is a legal system, in contrast to "common law", originating in Europe where legal principles are codified and case law/judicial decisions are generally seen to be secondary to statutory codes. Courses dealing with Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch law are typically considered to be "civil law" courses for the fulfillment of this requirement. Note that Public international law courses, even when taken on exchange in a university situated in a civil law jurisdiction, are not considered to be "civil law" courses.

University Research Opportunities Programme / Directed Research (DR)

All LLB and GLB students from Cohort AY2014-15 onwards are allowed to read one University Research Opportunities Programme / Directed Research (DR) in their candidature.
