PhD Experience in NUS
It was wonderful to have conducted my doctoral research on human rights institutionalization in the ASEAN region at the NUS Law School. Being in the region enabled me to better understand Southeast Asian politics and institutions and enrich my international law scholarship with cross-disciplinary approaches. My supervisor, Associate Professor Simon Tay, put me in touch with invaluable Southeast Asian contacts and I had the chance to work on regional projects and present my work at various meetings. Prior to submitting my thesis, I was a Ushiba Memorial ASEAN Fellow in Tokyo working on Japan's human security foreign policy. Thereafter, I spent two very happy years working with Prof Simon Chesterman in the NUS Law School as the Asian Society of International Law Research Fellow and published my first book on ASEAN and human rights with Cambridge University Press. While working on the NUS Centre for International Law's ASEAN Integration Through Law Project with Prof Joseph Weiler and A/P Michael Ewing-Chow, I've been seconded to the NYU Law School and the European University Institute. All very exciting!
