PhD Experience in NUS
"Enlightening, Challenging, and Supportive" - these three words encapsulate my experience at NUS Law. My intellectual curiosity was piqued through first-year courses, insightful off-class discussions with professors and peers, diverse year-round seminars, and an abundance of readily accessible resources. This potent blend fostered critical thinking, inspired exploratory thinking, and made the journey profoundly enlightening. The challenges were indeed significant. Conducting research in the field of the philosophy of criminal law, especially in a language that was not native to me, demanded a tremendous level of intellectual stamina and resilience. To meet the high expectations of my supervisor, Professor Andrew Simester, I had to constantly push my boundaries, critically engage with established theories, and articulate my arguments in a coherent, logical manner. Striking a balance between research obligations and personal upheavals, such as the demise of my beloved mother, the birth of my two precious daughters, and the onslaught of a global pandemic, was daunting. However, every hurdle surmounted served as a testament to my unwavering perseverance. Yet, amidst these challenges, support was never lacking. Professor Simester is approachable and understanding. He invested deeply in my personal growth, extending guidance that transcended academics. In conclusion, NUS Law fostered an environment that was enlightening, challenging, and supportive in equal measure, making my PhD journey not only enriching but truly unforgettable.
