The study of law at Chulalongkorn University began in 1933 when King Rama VII decided that law teaching at the Law School of the Ministry of Justice had developed to such an extent that it could be raised to university standard. The Faculty of Law and Political Science was thus established. In 1972, an independent Faculty of Law came into being at Chulalongkorn. The Faculty is today recognised as the leading law school in Thailand. Many of its alumni and professors have gone to become prominent leaders in Thai society, including Thongtong Chandransu (Deputy Permanent Secretary of Justice), Ukris Mongkolnawin (Speaker of the House of Senate and President of the Thai Parliament) and Surakiart Sathirathai (Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs).
