The National Law School of India was established in 1987 at the initiative of the Bar Council of India with the co-operation of the Karnataka state government, Bangalore University and the Karnataka State Bar Council. Under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986), the NLSIU enjoys complete administrative and academic autonomy together with flexibility for innovation and experimentation in the pursuit of excellence. By and large, the management of the institution rests with the organised legal profession of the country. The Chief Justice of India is the Chairman of the General Council of the School, and a large number of retired Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts as well as Senior Advocates assist the NLSIU in its teaching and research programmes. The first batch of students joined on 1 July 1988 in the integrated five-year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) course. Having first started out at Central College, Bangalore University, the NLSIU moved to its own premises at the present address in 1992.
