Nagoya University, Center for Asian Legal Exchange officially established in 2002 as a university level center for research in law and politics in Asia and a national center for cooperation and research in Japanese and other legal assistance to transitional and developing countries in Asia, CALE has been working side-by-side with the Graduate School of Law (GSL), in particular, to initiate different research projects and joint education programs with partner institutions inside and outside of Japan. These projects and programs initiated by CALE and the GSL have been aimed at fulfilling three essential missions:

Mission 1 - Research on Laws in Asia and the Science of Legal Assistance · Coordinating research on the laws of Asian countries and theories of legal assistance.

Mission 2 - Legal Education Assistance. Developing human resources needed by countries in Asia in making and operating laws by themselves.

Mission 3 - Training of Human Resources in Japan. Fostering global leaders or experts who know well about Asia and will be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of the region.

Specific activities include organization of international conferences, workshops and research teams jointly with other national and international partner institutions; implementation of short-term country-specific training programs initiated and funded by JICA for the benefit of legal and judicial officers from Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Middle East; and operations of 8 research and education centers in Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar.
