Rikkyo University, also known as Saint Paul’s University, is a private university in Tokyo. Founded in 1874 and chartered in 1922, Rikkyo has been one of the leading liberal arts education and research institutions in Japan, housing 10 undergraduate colleges and 12 graduate schools. Rikkyo is also known as the largest Anglican Christian affiliated university in Japan. A total of 19,000 students are currently studying in the undergraduate Colleges, while a total of 950 students are learning at the graduate level. Among all the students, there are approximately 800 degree-seeking international students. Rikkyo was designated as one of the top global universities in Japan by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and has been aiming to internationalize its academic milieu. In 2021, Rikkyo launched a program called ACE Program, which stands for the Asian Consortium for Excellence in Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Education. In the ACE program, Rikkyo collaborates with which is an inter-university exchange project with Peking University, Seoul National University and the National University of Singapore to create joint interdisciplinary educational programs.

The College of Law and Politics has three departments: the Department of Law, Department of Politics, and Department of International Business Law. The Department of Law accepts 180 students each year, while the Department of Politics accepts around 60, and the Department of International Business Law around 80. Since most of the courses offered in each of the Departments are open to law students who do not belong to that Department, students have opportunities to study law and politics regardless of the departments they belong to. This is one indication of Rikkyo’s advocacy of liberal arts education. As part of internationalization of Rikkyo University, the College started an international degree program called the Global Program under the Department of International Business Law in April 2022. In the Global Program, students, including both Japanese and international students, study Japanese law and other countries’ laws in English from comparative law perspectives. The College has a student exchange program with Singapore Management University.
