The East China University of Political Science and law, with its twin campuses situated in Shanghai, China, is one of the most prestigious Institutions of higher leaning in the country. Since its foundation in 1952, ECUPL has witnessed the development of China’s legal system. Having undergone 55 years of trials and hardships, the university initiated the humanistic principle of “endeavor earnestly to extend knowledge, revere virtues and laws”. Hard work leads to outstanding achievements. The university has developed from a single discipline college of only 303 students into a multi-discipline university of some 20,000 students. Its curriculum is focused on both undergraduate and graduate education and is complemented by adult continuing education. Its disciplines range from the primary one, science of law to others such as economics, management, finance and foreign languages.

The two campuses are located in Changning District and Songjiang Distrcit respectively and cover a total area of about 176 acres with a total building area of some 240,000 square meters. Currently the university has about 13,000 undergraduates, nearly 2,000 graduate students and more than 10,000 who are engaged in continuing education programs. Apart from the Law College, which includes departments of Jurisprudence, Economic Law, International Law and Criminal Justice, there are other major schools or departments devoted to business, foreign languages, political science and public administration, humanities, intellectual property rights, and sociology. The university currently has doctoral programs in International Law, legal history, criminal law and economic law. Its LLM programs include Jurisprudence, legal history, constitutional and administrative law, criminal law, civil and commercial law, procedure law, and economic law.

The university publishes several periodicals including the Law Journal of ECUPL and Study of Crimes and Juvenile Delinquency Research. The university has established nearly 40 institutes including the institute of Chinese Ancient Legal Documents, the Juvenile Delinquency institute, the Economic Law Research Center, the Judicial Research Center, the Economic & Commercial Research Center.

ECUPL also plays an active role in drafting & consulting on state and local legislation. Locally it has drafted, or organized the drafting of more than 10 major laws and regulations, including Regulations of Shanghai Municipality on Notarization, on Securities, on Teenager Protection and on Unfair Competition. Nationally it has participated in the drafting of over 200 laws and regulations, including the Legislation Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Securities Law of the People’s Republic of China. There are over 1,030 teaching and administrative staff at the university. More than 630 of them are teaching staff, among whom, 98 are professors and 230 are associate professors.
