The Faculty was established in 1972 and is the first law school in Malaysia to offer the Bachelor of Law (LLB) and the Master of Law (LLM) degree programmes. The Faculty moved into its own building in 1998. The building was named ‘Bangunan Sultan Azlan Shah’ after His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, Chancellor of the University of Malaya.

The founding Dean of the Faculty was the late Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim bin Mohamed Ibrahim who served until March 1983. The focus of the Faculty has always been the study of and research into Malaysian Law, which includes not only the reception of the common law but also the fields of Muslim Law and customary law, and also the development of the national language as the language of the law. This vision has been realized today as the Faculty has produced more than 2,500 graduates, fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and in English, since the first batch graduated in 1976.

The Faculty continues to provide a liberal and comprehensive study of law as a scholarly discipline. It aims to train and equip students with professional skills and ethics of the legal profession, combined with a critical examination of the law as an element of social organization, social change and justice. Since its establishment in 1972. The Faculty has been fulfilling its objectives through the many varied academic and student activities held within and outside the faculty.

Degrees offered by the faculty include the LLB degree and the BJuris (External) degrees as well as the Diploma in Public Law. At the postgraduate level, besides the LLM, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Doctor of Laws (LLD) degrees, the faculty also offers the Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) degree. The Faculty has also established a Centre of Excellence in Biodiversity Law (CEBLAW), and another centre exists in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics and Administration that is, the University of Malaya Malaysia Centre for Regulatory Studies (UMCoRS). The law students also have had their fair share of success and accolades, running an active Law Society and participating in national and international moot court competitions including the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition.

The Faculty hosts several important and prestigious public lectures, in particular the Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture Series which began in 1986 and has become the nation’s premier law lecture. Other public lectures hosted by the Faculty include the Tun Haji Abdul Razak Memorial Lecture Series, the Tun Mohamed Suffian Memorial Law Lecture Series, the Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali Foundation Chair Lecture and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Chair in International Law Lecture.

The Faculty continues to advance legal knowledge, learning and skills through quality research, education and training for the profession, nation and humanity. In line with the university’s vision, the Faculty has set itself to be an internationally renowned law school in research, publication and teaching.
