4th ASLI Conference Overwhelming response to the Fourth ASLI Conference on the theme "Voices of Asia for a Just and Equitable World" on 24th and 25th May 2007 The Fourth Annual ASLI Conference, hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (“UI”) in Jakarta, attracted an overwhelming response. The theme "Voices of Asia for a Just and Equitable World" drew many paper submissions. A total number of 308 participants gathered from 24 countries on 24th and 25th May 2007, as compared to 234 participants the previous year. There was also an increase in the number of paper presenters from 164 to 200. The wide-ranging panel titles included Environmental Law, Human Rights, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Competition Law, Legal Pluralism, Corporate Law and Governance and Intellectual Property Rights. The two-day conference, held at UI’s Depok Campus, was opened by Professor Hikmahanto Juwana, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Indonesia, followed by a welcome address from Professor Usman Chatib Warsa, Rector of the University of Indonesia, Professor Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmood, Chairman of the ASLI Board of Governors, and Professor at International Islamic University Malaysia. Besides the plenary sessions and parallel panels, UI hospitably planned several activities for the participants, including a tour of the 320-hectare Depok Campus and a city tour of Jakarta before the optional dinner. The dinner, held at the House of Danar Hadi - a well-known batik company in Indonesia – was hosted by PT Danarhadi and PT Mustika Ratu Indonesia in Javanese style. The participants were treated to an evening of Javanese Dances, Traditional Clothing Show and Traditional Music, Gamelan Jawa. After the main conference ended on the second day, the first Open Forum for New ASLI Members was held in the afternoon. The purpose of this Open Forum was to welcome the new members, to listen to their views and expectation, and to seek meaningful ways of collaboration. Dean Johannes Chan, Chairman of the 2007 Board of Governors, welcomed all the new ASLI members on behalf of ASLI and the Board of Governors. Assoc Prof Gary Bell, Director of ASLI, also welcomed the new members warmly before proceeding to share with the new members some decisions made at the Board of Governors’ meeting. |
