ASLI Fellowship Programme

Due to immigration restrictions, the duration of the Fellowship, which used to last up to two months, has been shortened. With effect from 2023, the Fellowship will be for a period of thirty (30) days within a time frame to be provided by ASLI.

For the following semesters in 2024-2025, the time frame is as follows. These periods fall within the NUS academic semesters.

Semester I: 1 October 2024 to 8 November 2024
Semester II: 3 March 2025 to 11 April 2025

Eligibility

Only full-time faculty members of ASLI Member Institutions (including Founding Member Institutions) can apply for this Fellowship. ASLI Fellows should continue to hold a full-time appointment at their institution during the visit.

Ph.D. students at an ASLI Member Institution are not eligible. Please note however that full-time faculty members at an ASLI Member Institution who are actually teaching full-time at their own faculty while in the finishing stages of their Ph.D. can be considered.

While at NUS Law, the ASLI Fellows are expected to conduct research on legal issues of interest to their respective jurisdiction (if from Asia) or to Asia in general. Each ASLI Fellow is expected to present a seminar paper during his or her Fellowship. He or she will be expected to contribute to the ASLI Working Paper Series within a month after the end of the Fellowship.

The ASLI Fellow is also encouraged to prepare a paper for presentation at the next ASLI Annual Conference following their Fellowship.

ASLI Fellows are required to be in residence in Singapore throughout the duration of the Fellowship.

Stipend & Benefits

NUS will provide the ASLI Fellow with
  • Stipend of S$75/day, hence total of $2250 payable at the end of the 30-day Fellowship. This will be pro-rated if the visit is shortened.
  • Accommodation (single occupancy). The type of housing will vary depending on the accommodation available at the time of the visit and will be determined by NUS.
  • A return economy class air ticket (by the most economical and direct route) from the city of the Fellow’s home institution.
ASLI Fellows will be granted full library access to the C.J. Koh Law Library. Depending on availability, Fellows may be given an office or a shared office equipped with a computer and internet connection. They will also be invited to all seminars and events held at NUS Law.

Applicants should be aware that living expenses in Singapore are comparable to other major metropolitan cities. Fellows should budget to have approximately SGD 1,000 to SGD 2,000 for their living expenses while in Singapore and ensure they have sufficient financial support or access to their funds during the duration of their Fellowship. The stipend will only be disbursed after the full duration of the Fellowship.
