Singapore Law in Context

Course Description:
This course will introduce the history of the common law and Singapore legal institutions (including Islamic law), as well as briefly situate Singapore's law and institutions in relation to other approaches, notably the civil law approach adopted in most Asian jurisdictions. The course may be complemented by field trips to court, a prison, and/or parliament. It should also include an examination of ADR mechanisms in Singapore and an introduction to professional ethics.

Contact Hours: 3 hours: 1.5 hours - pre-recorded lectures and videos & in-class tutorials; 1.5 hours engaging in discussion in class

Workload: Module is taught through a combination of pre-recorded lectures & videos & in-class tutorials. Students are expected to engage with the material online for 1.5hrs a wk and spend another 1.5hrs engaging discussion in-class after mastering the readings.

Mode of Assessment: Graded - Class participation - 30%; Final Exam - 70% [Closed Book]
