Principles of Conflict of Laws

Course Description:
The conflict of laws regulates international disputes before Singapore’s courts. This course focuses on one of its three central pillars – choice of law – which selects the governing law of international disputes. It will cover choice of law theory and doctrine, touching on general methodology, choice of law rules in the law of obligations and property, and the application of foreign law. Along with its sister course (International Commercial Litigation), it aims to give students an in-depth understanding of conflicts theory and practice.

Contact Hours: 3-hr weekly seminar

Workload: 3 hours

Mode of Assessment: Term Paper (default, due on 24 October 2024) or Class Participation (opt-in, limited to 10 students) - 30% & Final Exam - 70%

Preclusions: Not open to students who have done a substantially or significantly similar course.

Prerequisites: NNUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or common law equivalent.
