The Use of Force in International Law

Course Description:
This course introduces students to the rules on the use of force in international law. It does so from an historical perspective with special emphasis on state practice so that students can understand how and why the law on the use of force has evolved in the way it has. The course sets out the general prohibition on the use of force in the UN Charter, and introduces students to key concepts such as self-defence, humanitarian intervention, and aggression. Students will be introduced to debates on pre-emption, the use of force in pursuit of self-determination, and terrorism.

Mode of Assessment: Class Participation: 20%; Mid-Term Paper: 30%; 6-Hr Take Home Exam: 50% [Release: Fri, 2 Oct 2026 (3pm - 9pm)

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or common law equivalent.
