Topics in Punishment and Sentencing

Course Description:
This course aims to introduce students to various topics in criminal sentencing, including the justification of criminal punishment and the rationale behind different sentencing principles.
The focus of this course is theoretical and normative. While references will be made to sentencing laws in various jurisdictions (including Singapore, the UK, and the US), the course seeks not only to introduce students to the existing legal provisions but also to encourage them to think critically about whether these laws are justified.

Prerequisites: NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or common law equivalent.
