History of ASLI Conference

ASLI organises annual academic conferences hosted by its founding member institutions on a rotating basis. These conferences examine contemporary legal issues of interest to Asian countries and gather scholars and experts from the member institutions as well as from Asia and beyond.

The inaugural conference, hosted by the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, was held on 27th and 28th May 2004. In subsequent years, the annual conferences have been held at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (2005); East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai (2006); University of Indonesia in Jakarta (2007); National University of Singapore (2008); University of Hong Kong (2009); International Islamic University of Malaysia (2010); Kyushu University (2011); National University of Singapore (2012) and National Law School University, Bangalore (2013).

ASLI welcomes academics and intellectuals from within and outside Asia to attend and present papers. The conference is open to all, whether or not they present a paper. Indeed, we encourage individuals to use the conference as a meeting place for scholars interested in Asia-related legal issues to come together and exchange ideas, as well as to form close working and personal relationships.

At this year's conference sees the introduction of a new system of panel sponsorship, which is designed to encourage the pre-organisation of panels. This will hopefully encourage greater interaction amongst legal scholars in Asia and those working on Asian law-related issues.

University of Malaya will host the 11th ASLI Conference in May 2014.
