Call For Papers

Introduction

We are pleased to announce that the Asian Law Institute (ASLI) and the University of Malaya (UM) will hold the 11th Annual ASLI Conference in Malaysia on 29 & 30 May, 2014. We look forward to welcoming you, and value your contribution to the ongoing success of this annual conference.

The 11th ASLI Conference 2014

The purpose of the annual conference is to bring together scholars of Asian law from within and outside Asia to interact, share ideas and build collegial networks which may facilitate dialogue and research collaborations. In addition to the paper presentations and Distinguished Lecture, there will be a Research Forum and Poster Presentation. We hope that the research forum will be widely used to bring together collaborators in various projects. Presenters and non-presenters are encouraged to connect with fellow academics before the conference and to start thinking about potential research projects.

The conference format remains broadly the same as last year: there will be five rounds of six parallel sessions over two days. The broad theme of the 2014 conference is Law in Asia: Balancing Tradition and Modernization.

Within the conference theme, we will, as far as possible, group papers within broad subject areas, and will allocate the panels for each parallel session on this basis. Examples of subject areas which have been represented in previous conferences include Human Rights, Children and Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Competition Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Legal Pluralism, Religious Law, International Law, Criminal Law, Women and Law, Maritime Law, Corporate Law and Governance, International Business Law, Labour and Employment Law, Law and Economics, WTO Law and Law and Society.

However, we welcome papers on all topics, and the ‘Miscellaneous’ category means that it is not necessary for a paper to fit within any specific subject area in order to be accepted.

Call for papers

There will be four papers per panel to give presenters and discussants adequate time for fruitful engagement. In preparing abstracts of their proposed papers, we encourage prospective participants to address the conference theme. In addition to the general call for individual papers, we also encourage individuals to organize their own panels by coordinating with colleagues, preferably from other ASLI institutions. This will allow for the panels to be more cohesive and will also foster greater collaboration between academics, which is one of the key aims of ASLI.

Selection criteria for papers

The papers accepted for presentation at the ASLI conference will be selected on a competitive selection process. The quality of papers has improved considerably in recent years and, equally importantly, the quality of discussion surrounding the papers has also been elevated. The selection will be done jointly by the ASLI Secretariat and UM. The selection criteria will be as follows:

  • Relevance to the broad theme
  • Quality of the abstract
  • Geographical diversity of presenters
  • Balance between senior and junior presenters

Please read the following instructions on Submission carefully

Submissions of individual papers

Participants should indicate the title of their paper and the proposed panel category (based on the list provided in the abstract submission form). They should also indicate key words, identifying the theme of their paper, to assist in the categorization process.

The proposed panel should consist of 4 presenters, including the panel convener.

Sponsorship Application
ASLI 11th Conference sees the introduction of a new system of panel sponsorship which is designed to encourage the pre-organization of panels. If you wish to organise a panel for the ASLI 11th Conference, you may apply to ASLI for sponsorship.

The sponsorship will consist of a conference fee waiver for all panel participants. We will sponsor up to three panels for ASLI 11th Conference. Note the following requirements.

  • A panel must consist of FOUR papers, each of which is usually to be delivered by a single author.
    • Jointly authored papers are allowed but only one fee waiver will be granted for such paper.
  • Application for panel sponsorship must be made by the same deadline (1 December 2013, Sunday) as for paper abstracts
  • The four titles, abstracts, and author details must be submitted in the usual way (see below on submission instructions).
  • The panel organizer must be one of the proposed paper-givers for the panel in question. The organizer must send an email to asliconference@nus.edu.sg before the deadline indicating -
    • The panel title
    • The title of the papers and authors that are to be included in the panel (please give sufficient indication for the secretariat to know which papers are included)
    • A rationale for the panel in not more than 300 words. The rationale should explain the importance of the panel and the theme or themes that link the four papers.
    • The paper authors need not be from the same university, but must be from ASLI member institutions. If you plan a panel including scholars from any non-ASLI members, ensure that the institution(s) in question apply for ASLI membership in good time.
  • If a panel is not sponsored it may still be approved as a panel. If it is not approved as a panel, the individual papers can still be approved.

The deadline for submission is 1 December 2013, Sunday.
