University of Tokyo hosts 19th Asian Law Institute Virtual Conference

The University of Tokyo, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics hosted the 19th Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Conference, virtually, from 28 to 29 May 2022.

Organised annually by ASLI, the conference provides a platform for legal academics and scholars from Asia and beyond to present their research and examine contemporary legal issues of interest to Asian jurisdictions. The theme for the conference was “Sustainable Development and Law in Asia”.

The virtual conference opened with speeches from Professor Ryuji Yamamoto (Dean, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, The University of Tokyo); Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao (Chairman of the ASLI Board of Governors; Vice Chancellor, National Law University Delhi); and Associate Professor Kelry Loi (Co-Director, ASLI). The Hon Justice Katsuya Uga of The Supreme Court of Japan (Professor Emeritus, The University of Tokyo) delivered the opening Keynote Speech “SDGs and the Rule of Law”.

More than 120 participants attended the Opening of the Conference and a total of 160 papers were presented over the two days.

The Conference covered legal issues related to a wide variety of subjects that included Bankruptcy, Children, Gender & Family, Criminal Law, Constitution & Administrative Law, International Investment Law, Law & Public Health, Issues Related to Digital Platforms and Public Law, among others.

As with previous conferences, there was an ASLI Open Forum on the first day of the Conference to provide an opportunity to update ASLI members and invite ASLI members and conference attendees to ask questions and share their opinions.

After two full days of paper presentations, the conference came to a close in the evening of 29 May 2022 with a presentation on the 20th ASLI Conference by Professor Simon Chesterman (Dean, National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law) and Closing Remarks from Professor Masami Okino (Vice Dean, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, The University of Tokyo) and Associate Professor Kelry Loi (Co-Director, ASLI).

The 20th ASLI Conference, themed “Inclusivity and Diversity in the Context of Asian Law”, will be held at The National University of Singapore from 31 May to 1 June 2023.
