Feature National University of Singapore hosts 20th Asian Law Institute Conference NUS Law successfully hosted the 20th Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Conference from 31 May to 1 June 2023. The theme for the conference this year was “Inclusivity and Diversity in the Context of Asian Law”.This year’s conference, which marks the 20th anniversary of ASLI, saw around 200 participants, with 158 presentations organized into 25 panels including Banking and Finance, Human Rights, Criminal Law, Corporate Law and Governance. It also marks the return of the conference to an in-person format in Singapore, as we in NUS Law play host to our largest event with the largest number of international visitors since 2019. NUS Law welcomed legal scholars from all over Asia and beyond (including Africa, Europe, North and Latin America, and Australia). Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, opened the conference by warmly welcoming the delegates to Singapore and to NUS Law’s historic Bukit Timah campus. This was followed by speeches from Dr Velliana Tanaya (Universitas Pelita Harapan, Faculty of Law), the Chairperson of ASLI’s Board of Governors, and Associate Professor Kelry Loi, Co-Director of ASLI. This year’s keynote welcome speech was delivered by Mr Edwin Tong SC, Minister for Culture, Community & Youth and Second Minister for Law, who is an alumnus of NUS Law. The Minister’s substantive speech noted the economic rise of Asia, emphasised the importance of ASLI in promoting co-operation amongst scholars of Asian law, and suggested areas where scholars might constructively contribute towards Asia’s development. The two-day conference strengthened ties between legal scholars and law schools across Asia and beyond. The conference was a wonderful opportunity to discuss ideas on law and law reform in Asia, and it provided a forum for outstanding scholarship about law in Asia and demonstrated the collective commitment to advancing knowledge and ideas about law and justice in the diverse and fascinating region. As usual, the programme this year reflected a large range of topics and approaches to law, reflecting the strength and diversity of the member institutions of ASLI. At the closing of the conference on 1 June 2023, Professor Ernest Lim (Vice Dean for Faculty Development at NUS Law) delivered the closing keynote lecture on “Corporate Law and Sustainability / ESG”.
