About Bangkok
LOCATION

Bangkok is the cultural, economic and political capital of Thailand. The city features both old-world charm and modern convenience. Many visitors in Bangkok are overwhelmed by the sheer size of the city and the vast number of attractions it has to offer. Indeed, there are many sightseeing opportunities in Bangkok, spanning for more than two centuries of rapid development following the city's founding in 1782. Today, Bangkok is considered a transport hub and a popular travel destination in Asia.

CLIMATE

Located near the equator, Bangkok has a tropical climate. The temperatures typically range from 19 to 38C (66-100 F). Monsoon rains fall predominately from May to July, and cooler weather occurs around November and December.

LANGUAGE

Thai is the official language of Thailand. English is spoken and understood by some locals, particularly in key cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

TIME

The standard time in Bangkok is GMT +7.

BANK

Banks are normally open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Meanwhile, branches and currency exchange booths located inside shopping malls are open during weekend, and they operate longer hours. To locate a bank near you, click here.

The local currency is Thai Baht. The current exchange rate is approximately USD1 to THB35.81 (subject to change). Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, hotels and the airport. To know the current exchange rates, click here.

CREDIT CARDS

All major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants. The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and Master Card. Restaurants and shops generally display signs indicating which cards are accepted.

ELECTRICITY

The standard voltage in Thailand is 220V. Power outlets usually accommodate flat two pronged plugs, though some feature holes for round plug ends. Only few power outlets feature three holes (grounded outlets) so it is necessary to have a three to two prong adapter when going to Bangkok.

The country code +66 is used for calling Thailand from another country. Local SIM cards for mobile phone can be purchased at the airport, shopping malls and convenience stores. Moreover, mobile phones from overseas will work in Thailand, provided they are compatible with GSM 900 and 1800 networks.
