Universitas Indonesia (UI), Faculty of Law, hosts the 23^rd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference

The Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia (UI), hosted the 23^rd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference from 3 to 4 June 2026.

The conference was held at UI’s Depok Campus, kicking off with the opening ceremony held on 3 June 2026 attended by delegates from across Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America, and South America.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Parulian Paidi Aritonang, Dean of UI’s Faculty of Law, warmly welcomed participants to Jakarta and to the university’s beautiful Depok Campus. Joining in to extend his warmest welcome to all conference delegates was Professor Mahmud Sudibandriyo, Acting Rector of UI (representing the Rector, Professor Heri Hermansyah,).

Held annually by ASLI, the conference brings together legal academics and scholars from Asia and around the world to present research and exchange ideas on contemporary legal issues of significance to Asian jurisdictions and to those interested in Asian law. This year’s theme, “Empowering Asia’s Rise: Legal Knowledge for Sustainability, Justice and Regional Integration,” framed two days of vibrant discussion, scholarly engagement, and collaborative dialogue.

Continuing with the order of the opening ceremony, Professor Wu Qiaofang, Director of International Exchange Centre & Dean of International School, East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), and Chairperson of the ASLI Board of Governors; as well as Associate Professor Kelry Loi, of the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS Law), and Co-Director of ASLI, thanked the ASLI Board of Governors (BOG) for their support of ASLI’s flagship annual conference and importantly, the participants whose scholarly contributions made this conference and vibrant exchange of ideas possible.

The opening ceremony concluded with a keynote speech by the Honourable Professor Dr. H. Sunarto, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia.

Over the course of the two-day event, the ASLI Annual Conference strengthened ties among scholars from within and beyond Asia who share an interest in Asian law and legal reform. The conference programme featured a wide range of topics and approaches, reflecting the diversity and strength of ASLI’s member institutions. About 200 legal scholars from leading universities around the world participated. There were around 200 paper presentation at the conference, organised across 37 specialist panels covering diverse areas including Environmental Law, Banking and Finance, Criminal Law, Information Technology Law, and Legal Education.

The conference concluded on the evening of 4 June 2026 with a closing ceremony that featured a Closing Keynote Lecture by Professor Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi, of the Board of Professors, at UI’s Faculty of Law, followed by a Closing Keynote Speech by His Excellency Professor Yusril Ihza Mahendra, the Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction of the Republic of Indonesia.

Buzzing with anticipation as we look forward to the 24th ASLI Annual Conference 2027, Professor Umakanth Varottil, NUS Law’s Vice Dean (Graduate Studies), announced that the forthcoming conference will be held on 26 and 27 May 2027 and expressed NUS Law’s keen excitement to welcome everyone to Singapore.

Following ASLI’s tradition, the handover of the BOG (Board of Governors) Chair was carried out in a simple ceremony, with Dr. Parulian Paidi Aritonang, Dean of UI’s Faculty of Law, the incoming Chairperson of the ASLI BOG for 2026, taking over the Chair from ECUPL’s Professor Wu Qioafang, the current Chairperson.

The closing ceremony concluded with closing remarks from UI’s Dean Dr. Parulian Paidi Aritonang and ASLI Co-Director Associate Professor Kelry Loi. Dr. Parulian expressed his gratitude to all the presenters for their scholarly contribution, to ASLI for their close partnership, and to all the UI administrative staff and student team for their dedication and contribution towards the conference. Associate Professor Loi chimed in to share his appreciation to UI for hosting the annual conference, and to thank everyone for their contribution towards another successful ASLI conference.


The 24th ASLI Annual Conference 2027 will be hosted by Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore on 26 and 27 May 2027, with the theme “The Role of Law in an Era of Geopolitical and Technological Transformation”.
